January 2, 2007 AMERICA’S JUNIOR MISS 2006, TAYLOR PHILLIPS, ARRIVES IN MOBILE Taylor Phillips, America’s Junior Miss for 2006, arrived in Mobile today to participate in several events throughout the coming week. A native of Versailles, KY, Taylor is currently a student at Stanford University. Taylor will attend the GMAC Bowl Team Welcoming Reception, sponsored by Alabama Power Company, this evening at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. On Wednesday morning at 9:00, she will participate in the GMAC Bowl Godfather’s Pizza Hospital Visit to the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital. A meet and greet with Taylor will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.on Wednesday at Naman’s Midtown Market (2540 Old Shell Road.) The public is encouraged to attend. Taylor will attend the GMAC Bowl Cellular South FCA Breakfast at the Riverview Plaza Hotel on Friday at 7:00 a.m. At 10:00 a.m., she will speak to students at the Regional School (3980 Burma Road) about Be Your Best Self, AJM’s national outreach program to increase self esteem in young people. At 1:30 p.m., she will visit Morningside Elementary School (2700 Greenbrier Drive) to share information about BYBS with students there. Friday night, Taylor will attend the GMAC Financial Services Mayor’s Dinner at Mobile Convention Center. On Saturday, Taylor will attend the “Cookie Olympics,” an event sponsored by the Girl Scouts of the Deep South, to help kick off this year’s cookie sale. This will take place at Creekwood Church (1901 Schillinger Road) at 2:00 p.m. After the Cookie Olympics, Taylor will participate in the GMAC Bowl Greer’s Food Tiger Mardi Gras Parade in downtown Mobile at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, Taylor will attend the GMAC Bowl game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and will participate in the coin-toss prior to the game, scheduled to take place at 6:55 p.m. America’s Junior Miss (AJM), is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school senior girls. The nonprofit program’s goal is to honor young women who excel and encourage them to obtain a college education and assume roles of leadership in their communities and professions. During the past 49 years, AJM has awarded scholarships totaling more than $88 million to girls across the nation. More than 700,000 young collegebound young women have competed in the program, including Diane Sawyer, co-host of ABC’s "Good Morning America" and co-anchor of "Primetime Thursday;" Deborah Norville, host of both "Inside Edition" and MSNBC’s "Deborah Norville Tonight;" and Debra Messing, co-star of NBC’s "Will & Grace." AJM’s national sponsors for 2006-2007 are the City of Mobile, Mobile County, and the Mitchell Company. Category sponsors are Alabama Power, Encore Rehabilitation, Mobile Gas, Regions Bank, and Wintzell’s Oyster House. AJM will celebrate its 50th Annual National Finals on June 28-30, 2007 in Mobile.
